My Biography
Dr. Carina King is a highly respected infectious disease epidemiologist and global health researcher, serving as Epidemiology Advisor at Global South Open Health Education (GSOUTH). In this role, she provides strategic epidemiological leadership that strengthens GSOUTH’s research, education, and capacity-building initiatives, ensuring they are grounded in rigorous science and responsive to health system realities across the Global South.
Dr. King brings over a decade of experience conducting and leading high-impact epidemiological research in low- and middle-income settings, with a particular focus on childhood pneumonia, emergency care systems, and health service delivery. Her work addresses critical gaps in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of severe childhood illness, translating complex epidemiological evidence into practical solutions that improve clinical decision-making and health outcomes.
As Epidemiology Advisor at GSOUTH, Dr. King supports the development of applied research programmes, methodological frameworks, and evidence-driven learning content across the institution’s priority areas. She plays a key advisory role in projects focused on health systems strengthening, maternal and child health, epidemic preparedness, and implementation science, helping ensure that GSOUTH’s work delivers actionable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and health professionals.
Dr. King is currently leading and co-leading major research initiatives in Nigeria, including projects aimed at reducing pneumonia-specific mortality by improving early detection and emergency care pathways for children in both community and primary healthcare settings. Her work combines advanced epidemiological methods  including randomized trials, cohort studies, and mixed-methods research. With strong engagement of local stakeholders to ensure relevance, sustainability, and impact.
She holds a PhD in Infectious Disease Epidemiology from Imperial College London, an MSc in Control of Infectious Diseases from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and a BA in Biological Sciences from the University of Oxford. Dr. King is also deeply committed to teaching, mentorship, and capacity development, contributing to the training of researchers and health professionals through formal instruction and collaborative supervision.
Dr. King’s vision aligns closely with GSOUTH’s mission: to strengthen health systems and advance health equity through high-quality education, rigorous research, and meaningful partnerships. As Epidemiology Advisor, she continues to support GSOUTH in bridging global expertise with local knowledge, turning evidence into action and research into real-world impact across Africa and beyond.
