Professor Akhere Omonkhua
My Biography
Prof. Akhere Omonkhua is a Professor of Medical Biochemistry at the University of Benin, Nigeria, and currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of the Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF). She is a leading biomedical researcher whose work focuses on the characterization of bioactive phytochemicals and the investigation of molecular mechanisms underlying the use of medicinal plants in the treatment of diabetes and reproductive disorders, using in vivo, in vitro, and in silico approaches.
With a strong foundation in toxicology and biochemistry, Prof. Omonkhua has contributed extensively to scientific research, with numerous peer-reviewed publications and active participation in international research collaborations. Her work has advanced understanding of plant-based therapeutics and their role in addressing critical health challenges, particularly within African contexts.
Her research interests also extend to population and nutritional science, including ongoing investigations into factors contributing to the unusually high rate of dizygotic twinning in Igbo-Ora, Nigeria—an area of global scientific interest.
Prof. Omonkhua brings extensive leadership experience in research development and institutional capacity building. Prior to her appointment as CEO of AREF, she served as Project Coordinator of the World Bank–supported African Centre of Excellence in Reproductive Health Innovation (CERHI) at the University of Benin, where she led multidisciplinary research initiatives, supported early- and mid-career researchers, and contributed to the development of postgraduate training programmes aimed at strengthening Africa’s research ecosystem.
A dedicated advocate for research excellence and sustainability, she has played a key role in mentoring emerging scientists, advancing interdisciplinary collaboration, and promoting high-impact, locally relevant research across the continent. Her work reflects a strong commitment to building the next generation of African researchers and advancing evidence-based solutions to global health challenges.
