Dr Carina King is an accomplished infectious diseases epidemiologist and Associate Professor of Global Health, renowned for her pioneering research on paediatric pneumonia diagnosis, treatment, and management in sub-Saharan Africa. With over a decade of field experience, Dr King has spearheaded vaccine effectiveness studies, piloted and redesigned novel diagnostic technologies, and developed predictive algorithms to enhance treatment decision-making for childhood pneumonia. Her passion lies in clinical research conducted at the community level, particularly interventions that improve early detection and management of severe childhood illnesses.
Currently, Dr King’s work focuses on strengthening emergency care for children within primary healthcare settings in Africa by refining the identification of severely ill children and optimising referral pathways. She also co-leads a transformative project in Nigeria aimed at reducing pneumonia-specific mortality in children across Lagos and Jigawa states. Dr King’s extensive research portfolio spans Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia, employing a diverse array of methodologies including cluster randomised trials, implementation science, prospective cohort studies, and mixed-methods research.
Her academic credentials include a PhD in Infectious Epidemiology from Imperial College London (2012), an MSc in Control of Infectious Diseases from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (2009), and a BA in Biological Sciences from the University of Oxford (2008). Dr King also holds an Arena Associate Fellow Teaching Qualification from University College London (2016), underscoring her commitment to excellence in teaching and capacity building.
